On May 5, 1876, an area extending from LaBelle to Hamshire, Fannett, and Cheek was established in Jefferson County and called Taylor's Bayou, Texas.
When the Gulf and Interstate Railway was built from Beaumont to Galveston in 1891, it ran through the property of B. J. Fannett. The town of Fannett was officially named for him on April 3, 1903.
According to church records, the Fannett Baptist Church was organized on the 6th day of July, 1912, with four charter members including the following: Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Martin, Miss Sara Collier, and Miss Nanny Boyt, R. J. Brown, Moderator, J. L. Marble, Church Clerk.
The Fannett Baptist Church joined the Southeast Texas Baptist Association officially in 1913.
Until a church could be built the members met in the old school house located at the corner of Gilbert Road and Mahon Road. Mr. and Mrs. Will Boyt and Arthur Boyt donated some land about a block from the school on Mahon Road. A one room frame building was built by Will Davis and later a parsonage was added next to the church.
In 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Craigen donated some land on Highway 124 for the church. A new church was built and the parsonage was moved to the new location. In 1955, an educational building was added.
In 1980, the present church was built on the corner of Highway 124 and Burrell Wingate Road. It was dedicated in 1981 and the name was changed from Fannett Baptist to the First Baptist Church of Fannett.
